It’s OK, Dude. Let it out. Carl’s there to help you through it.
Well, him and however many people are reading this thing and discovering how dusty their room is all of a sudden.

Oh man, if I was him, I would hate/dislike my parents too. I loved my grandmother a lot, I knew when she died, I teased my father and he said he wasn’t in the mood when he picked me up from school, I immediately looked at him and knew, my grandmother passed away. I said to him “It’s grandma isn’t it?” He looked at me with teary eyes and nodded, it was a sad day.

I wonder what gramps was like to make the mom not like him hanging around Dude

This is my thought process too. Like, we’re being really quick to judge the parents based on DUDE’S narrative. You know, the character that 20 pages ago everyone was ready to burn alive. Now, I’m not saying he wasn’t close to his grandfather and doesn’t feel real grief and sorrow at his passing. But *maybe* there was a reason his parents didn’t want his grandfather around him. Maybe there was something unhealthy there.

Dude was old enough at the time to make the difference between unhealthy and healthy adult behavior. And if Dude’s mom had tried to protect him from a rapey relative, don’t you think she’d behave differently, now? Wouldn’t she make some sincere attempt at patching things up with her beloved son? Look at what she’s doing instead.
The way she stares at Dude is really creepy
The way the father stands back and isn’t even trying to say a word to his son he hasn’t seen for so long is really creepy
The way mom tried to wriggle information out of Carl that Dude had refused to give her was really creepy
I think the creepy person here has always been mom, not Gramps. It’s not just Dude’s narrative, it’s the entire family interraction.
Loogaroo
This late into the story, I doubt there’s going to be much revelation about Dude’s grandfather actually being a child molester that Dude needed to be separated from. More likely than not there was something about Gramps’ personality that the parents didn’t like (might be that he was actually gay, but might not too) and they were that special brand of vindictive and petty to tear the relationship apart just as Gramps was about to pass on.
